Talampaya National Park Guide: Prices, Photos and Tips for Visiting in La Rioja

Talampaya National Park is one of those places that leave you speechless. Its reddish cliffs, the petroglyphs carved by ancient Indigenous peoples, the famous Talampaya Canyon and the formations that look like they're from another planet make it a stop you shouldn't miss if you're traveling through northern Argentina. In this article we tell you how much the entrance fee costs, which tours you can do, how many days to give it and how to combine it with Valle de la Luna (Ischigualasto), which is very close. We share our experience, some key tips and everything we wish we'd known before going.

How much is the entrance fee to Talampaya National Park?

Talampaya National Park is one of the main tourist attractions in the province of La Rioja, Argentina. Covering more than 2,000 km², the park lies in the heart of La Rioja's desert and offers spectacular views of rock formations dating back more than 250 million years. It's also a natural habitat for a wide variety of native animals such as guanacos, pumas, foxes, condors and eagles. In 2000 UNESCO declared Talampaya National Park and Ischigualasto Provincial Park a World Heritage Site because of their great geological and paleontological importance, since the remains of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals have been found in the park.

To get into the national park you have to pay an entrance fee. Here are the 2025 rates:

  • Argentine residents: ARS 7,000. If you're visiting the park for 2 days, there's a promotional price.
  • Residents of La Rioja province: ARS 5,000
  • General rate (foreigners): ARS 20,000

These prices are for entry to the park only and don't include the tours, which are paid separately and are required to visit most of the open areas. We recommend booking them in advance, especially if you're going in high season.

You can't explore Talampaya on your own the way you can other national parks. You have to do it on an authorized tour (on foot, by bike or in vehicles that leave from the park's main base).

Talampaya National Park opening hours:

  • Summer season: 8:00 to 19:30
  • Winter season: 8:30 to 18:30

The park has free parking and a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks and dinner.

It also has a camping area. In 2025 a campsite costs ARS 3,500, and there are bathrooms, showers and grills. The restaurant is open until 22:00, so you can also have dinner there.

When is the best time to go to Talampaya?

The best time to visit Talampaya is fall and spring (April-May / September-October), when the weather is mild and pleasant for tours.

  • Summer: very hot (over 40°C), not a great idea if you want to walk or bike. There can also be heavy rain that forces the national park to close.
  • Winter: cold in the mornings and at night, but quiet, with fewer tourists.
  • Fall and spring: ideal weather, more colorful landscapes and less extreme temperatures.

💡 Bring water, a cap and sunscreen all year round.

What can you do in Talampaya National Park?

Tours are the only way to explore Talampaya, since you're not allowed in on your own or with your own car. Everything is done with authorized guides from the visitor center. The company with the concession for the park's most popular tours is Volterra.

The tours to Talampaya Canyon by van or 4x4 truck are the classic option and also the most booked. You ride in a safari-style 4x4 or in a van, with stops at key spots such as:

  • The high-altitude Jardín Botánico (botanical garden)
  • Formations such as El Monje, La Catedral and El Totem
  • Petroglyphs with ancient rock art

There are 4 different vehicle circuits through Talampaya Canyon:

  1. Cañón del Talampaya: This is the most famous route. It visits the park's main attractions and takes about 2 and a half hours. On the tour you can see the petroglyphs, the botanical garden, the Catedral Gótica and El Monje. You can book the tour here.
  2. Cañón del Talampaya + Balcones: This circuit is more complete and takes 4 hours. It includes everything in the previous tour plus a short hike up to the Balcones del Talampaya. If you like walking, this is the best option.
  3. Cañón del Talampaya + Cañón de Shimpa: Unlike the previous ones, this route is done in an overland truck with an open-top upper deck. It covers the same route as the first circuit and adds a short walk through the Shimpa Canyon. You can book the tour here.
  4. Naturaleza y cultura del Talampaya (nature and culture): This is the shortest route and only includes the petroglyphs stop.

In short, to see Talampaya Canyon, the one in all the photos of the place, you can choose any of the first three circuits. If you're up for walking, we think the best and most complete is Cañón del Talampaya + Balcones.

Important: We recommend booking at least a few days in advance.

Walking tours in Talampaya

These tours are offered by various travel agencies.

  1. Cañón del Talampaya: This easy hike takes 3 hours and visits the petroglyphs and the botanical garden, home to the echo chimney (chimenea del eco). You walk along the river of the same name, between cliffs about 150 m (490 ft) high. You can book the tour here.
  2. Quebrada de Don Eduardo: Also easy and also 3 hours long. This circuit goes through a narrow gorge with high walls, where you can see geological formations similar to those of Talampaya Canyon, on a smaller scale. You can book the tour here.
  3. El Gran Mirador: This circuit, also easy, offers something quite different: a panoramic view of the park from a hilltop. You can book the tour here.
  4. Full moon night tour: If you're going around a full moon, don't miss the chance to walk through Talampaya Canyon by moonlight. Remember to book it in advance here.

Bike tours in Talampaya

You can also explore Talampaya Canyon by bike on a tour. The full route is 19 km (11.8 miles) and takes 3 and a half hours.

The Cañón Arco Iris area

Talampaya National Park is huge and its best-known area is Talampaya Canyon, but there's another one called Cañón Arco Iris (Rainbow Canyon), with two tours that are just as impressive. These tours are run by the guides' cooperative.

  1. Cañón Arco Iris: A walk of 1 and a half hours through a narrow canyon, where you see the different shades of the minerals that make up the walls. They go from red to yellow, by way of green and violet. Book the tour here.
  2. Ciudad Perdida: A slightly longer walk, where you see a bit of Cañón Arco Iris and reach an area of rock formations that look like a cluster of tall buildings. Book the tour here.

The entrance to this area is 15 km from the Talampaya National Park entrance on Route 76 (Ruta 76). To find it, search for “Cañón Arco Iris y Ciudad Perdida” on Google Maps. A guide stays with you for the whole visit and tells you a great deal about the place. They only take cash and it's open from 9:00 to 17:00. You don't need to book in advance: groups form as people arrive (minimum of 4 people per group).

How much time do you need to see Talampaya?

Half a day is enough to see the main sights of Talampaya, since the tours are organized and leave at set times from the visitor center. If you only want to do one tour (the classic one through Talampaya Canyon by vehicle), in about 2 to 3 hours you'll have seen the most iconic part.

But if you want to add a walk or a bike ride, or do more than one tour, you can give it 1 full day.

Where to stay to visit Talampaya National Park

If you're planning your trip, one of the most common questions is: where's the best place to stay to visit Talampaya National Park? The good news is that there are several options depending on your budget, your travel style and whether you also plan to see Valle de la Luna (Ischigualasto Provincial Park).

Villa Unión – The base with the most services

It's the biggest and best-equipped town in the area. It's about 60 km from Talampaya National Park and has a wide range of places to stay, restaurants, gas stations and supermarkets.

It's ideal if you want more comforts and places to eat, and plan to get around on booked tours.

Places we recommend in Villa Unión:

Pagancillo – Quiet and closer to the park

It's just 30 km from the park, so it's a good option if you want to be closer to Talampaya and leave early without much driving. It's a small town with a few inns and family-run guesthouses.

It's ideal if you're after peace and quiet, nature and being close to the park entrance.

Hotel El Chiflón Posta Pueblo – Between Talampaya and Ischigualasto

This is the hotel we chose to stay at. It's on National Route 150 (Ruta Nacional 150) and makes an excellent halfway option if you want to visit both Talampaya and Valle de la Luna. It's inside El Chiflón Provincial Park, which is worth seeing. It has its own restaurant and tours. It's perfect for a quiet stay in a good location.
